Raquel Walton

Raquel Walton is a ceramicist working from her home studio in rural Co.Clare. A graduate of Limerick School of Art and Design, she founded herbusiness Creative Clay in 2015, building a reputation for colourfulhandbuilt stoneware inspired by the wildflowers of the Burren and theIrish hedgerow. Her recent work marks a shift in direction, quieter, moreintuitive, and sculptural, exploring the weathered surfaces of the naturalworld through built texture and lava glaze. She continues to work in bothdirections from her Sixmilebridge studio.Artist StatementThis work is about looking deeper. Beneath the wildflowers and the bloom,to the lichen, the moss-covered stone, the weathered, compostingsurfaces shaped by nature and time. The textures we walk past everyday, the quiet details that only reveal themselves when we stop and reallylook.I've been exploring new ways of working with clay, building texture andusing lava glazes that erupt and crawl in the firing, leaving surfaces Icouldn't have planned. There is an unexpected beauty in that, in steppingback, letting go of the outcome, and accepting what emerges. Each pieceis a small, tactile observation of the natural world, an invitation to slowdown, to look closely at what's hidden, and to bring that mindfulness into the home.
